Yuan Longping (September 7, 1930 May 22, 2021) was a Chinese agricultural scientist and educator known for developing the first hybrid rice variety in the 1970s. His hybrid rice has been grown in dozens of countries in Africa, the Americas, and Asia, providing a powerful source of food for high famine risk areas.

Mr. Yuan has won the National Outstanding Science and Technology Award in 2000, the Wolf Agricultural Award in 2004, and the World Food Prize. He is currently the director of the China Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center and a professor at Hunan Agricultural University Changsha Branch. Mr. Yuan was born in Beijing, China and enjoys playing the violin, swimming, and motorcycles.

袁隆平（1930年9月7日－2021年5月22日）是一位中国农业科学家和教育家，因在20世纪70年代开发出第一个杂交水稻品种而闻名。他的“杂交水稻”已经在非洲、美洲和亚洲的'几十个国家种植，为高饥荒风险地区提供了强大的粮食来源。

袁先生曾获2000年国家杰出科学技术奖、2004年沃尔夫农业奖和世界粮食奖，现任中国杂交水稻研究开发中心主任，现任湖南农业大学长沙分校教授，袁先生出生于中国北京，爱好拉小提琴、游泳和摩托车。

He thought that only by crossing different species of rice plant can we solve the food problem. Step by step, Yuan became the leading figure of the rice-growing world. In 1970 he made a breakthrough which is supported by government.

Yuan made a contribution in agriculture, not only to China, but to the whole world. As far as I am concerned, he is more than a scientist. He is a hero.
